Pride and the Planet: San Diego’s LGBTQIA+ Changemakers
Environmentalism and Pride have long been intertwined. In 1978, activist Gilbert Baker designed the iconic rainbow flag. Baker chose eight colors, each with intended meaning. The green stripe reflected the community’s natural belonging in the world and the enduring ties between environmentalism and queer identity.
Over the past few decades, waves of environmental justice and climate activism have rippled throughout the country. With them has come an understanding that environmental challenges don’t stand alone.
Limited access to clean air, green space, and climate resilience disproportionately affects marginalized groups, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community. During environmental disasters and climate emergencies, queer communities frequently face barriers to support, housing, healthcare, and other essential resources.
In response, LGBTQIA+ groups have mobilized as core leaders in the push for climate justice. National groups like Queer Nature, Out for Sustainability (O4S), and Queer Eco Project steer movements for equitable access to environmental resources, education, and communities.

While national Pride celebrations kicked off this June, San Diego’s festivities start in July. (Pride warrants warmer days and the end of June gloom.) We Out Here SD

Collective Coalition SD
Collective Coalition works to protect San Diego’s LGBTQIA+ community from the harm of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.

The world’s first gay-owned brewery, Hillcrest Brewing Co. is a neighborhood pizza and craft beer staple.

Studio Door
Studio Door is a contemporary art gallery and working-studio hub, located in Hillcrest. The Studio Door hosts PROUD+ each year, an exhibition empowering the work of 56 queer artists.
Diversionary Theatre
The third-oldest LGBTQIA+ theatre in the country, Diversionary Theatre is hub for creative expression, inclusion and social justice. Diversionary has produced over 137 productions, elevating the complex and diverse stories of queer communities.
The Feminist Bookstore
This bookstore is a nonprofit that spotlights the voices of bold feminists, historically marginalized authors and local San Diego artists.
