The theme for this year’s first ever San Diego Climate Week is “resilience”. Resilience means helping our community adapt and thrive amidst a changing climate, and San Diego’s creativity, culture, and long tradition of celebrating art as power is core to this movement.

Indigenous Youth & Kelp Restoration Art Event | Coastal Defenders + Jen Smith Lab

Join a Coastal Defenders Knowledge Exchange! Get the opportunity to create your own, personalized seaweed pressing artwork with Scripps Institution of Oceanography Seaweed Scientist Danielle McHaskell.
Local Indigenous youth will lead participants on a tour of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier, sharing their research in both Indigenous + academic science in the field of kelp restoration.
The Jen Smith Lab will then lead a tour of the outdoor Seaweed Slab Lab.

Four inspiring, local leaders who will share stories rooted in science, local wisdom, and personal experiences of re-wilding, creating an uplifting space for learning, Earth optimism, and celebration of San Diego’s living ecosystems. Art vendors will be sharing their work and its connection to nature and community.
