Spotlight on Arts & Culture at SD Climate Week

The theme for this year’s first ever San Diego Climate Week is “resilience”. Resilience means helping our community adapt and thrive amidst a changing climate, and San Diego’s creativity, culture, and long tradition of celebrating art as power is core to this movement. 

Across the 80+ events taking place from October 1st – 8th, many events will reflect San Diego’s vibrant arts and culture scene. From sustainable crochet workshops to youth art exhibitions, there’s something for everyone. Learn more:

Stop by La Jolla to check out the Enviro-Art Youth Climate Exhibition, featuring phenomenal winning artwork by youth climate heroes. This year, the art is themed around Fast Fashion public health and environmental impacts.

Bring your story. Bring your voice. Bring the moment that changed you. ​At the Climate Story Slam, we’re inviting innovators, change-makers, and everyday climate champions to step up and share the stories that matter. You’ll have 5 minutes on the mic to tell your climate story—whether it’s:

  • An innovation that has you buzzing with excitement
  • An insight that keeps you up at night
  • ​A personal experience the world needs to hear
  • ​The fear that drives you forward or the hope that fuels your fight

Indigenous Youth & Kelp Restoration Art Event | Coastal Defenders + Jen Smith Lab

La Jolla 

Join a Coastal Defenders Knowledge Exchange! Get the opportunity to create your own, personalized seaweed pressing artwork with Scripps Institution of Oceanography Seaweed Scientist Danielle McHaskell. 

​Local Indigenous youth will lead participants on a tour of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier, sharing their research in both Indigenous + academic science in the field of kelp restoration.

​The Jen Smith Lab will then lead a tour of the outdoor Seaweed Slab Lab.

Storytelling Event | Sea:Grass Sessions

Mission Hills 

Join Sea:Grass Sessions— intimate gatherings where local changemakers share personal stories of regenerating nature and community.

​Four inspiring, local leaders who will share stories rooted in science, local wisdom, and personal experiences of re-wilding, creating an uplifting space for learning, Earth optimism, and celebration of San Diego’s living ecosystems. Art vendors will be sharing their work and its connection to nature and community. 

Crochet & Cabernet: A Consciously Chic Beginner’s Crochet workshop | The Block Club SD 

Imperial Ave, Black Arts & Culture District

​Join us for a cozy, creative evening of crafting, sustainability, and community during San Diego Climate Week!

​In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of crochet while sipping wine and connecting with fellow makers. Guided by Janae Keller, fashion stylist and event producer, you’ll explore the basics of crochet techniques and discover how timeless handcraft can be both stylish and sustainable.

Joy As Resistance: An Interactive Poetry Experience Un Mar De Colores

Barrio Logan 

During SD Climate Week, Un Mar De Colores will partner with Future is Color to host “Joy As Resistance”, a creative event celebrating community resilience in the face of ecological harm. ​The night will weave together culture, live music, and poetry readings to reflect on the ways art, personal expression, and joy are powerful forms of resistance and activism.

Join The Sustainability Creatives for a bonfire on Fiesta Island! We bring together people who care about sustainability and creativity to connect, share ideas, and build community.
