While San Diego is celebrated for its climate, the impacts of a changing environment are increasingly evident and measurable. The unprecedented 2.73 inches of rain in 24 hours during January 2024 caused widespread flooding, damaging thousands of homes (FEMA data). This flood, along with this year’s SoCal wildfires, serves as our wake-up call that climate change is no longer a distant threat.
With federal leadership on climate increasingly uncertain or even hostile, the responsibility to act has shifted to communities. That’s why we’re launching the inaugural San Diego Climate Week, running from October 1–8, 2025.
What is San Diego Climate Week?
San Diego Climate Week is a community-led movement designed to bring people together to inspire collaboration, build climate resilience, shape policy and connect people across the region. While the City and County of San Diego have adopted Climate Action Plans, public awareness and coordinated action remain limited. Meanwhile, frontline communities, especially in our border region, continue to face the harshest climate impacts and are too often excluded from policy and decision-making processes.
This weeklong event will feature 100+ in-person and online events across San Diego County, drawing an expected 5,000 participants. Events will include:
- Educational workshops
- Expert panels and roundtables
- Volunteer opportunities, such as beach and canyon cleanups
- Art installations and exhibitions
- Community forums
- Climate policy advocacy sessions
Each event is designed to move conversations forward with practical, actionable outcomes, giving San Diegans the tools, knowledge, and networks to shape a more resilient future.
This Year’s Theme: Resilience
The theme of San Diego Climate Week 2025 is Resilience. This concept may take a different form for different sectors of our each community, but it connects us all. Climate change touches every corner of our county:
- Farmers in Fallbrook face rising water costs and scarcity.
- Families near the Tijuana River Valley enduring worsening floodwaters and pollution.
- Outdoor workers in East County battling longer and hotter summers each year.
- Young people across San Diego are wondering how the climate will impact them in years to come.
Resilience means helping every San Diegan adapt and thrive, despite these mounting challenges. Whether that’s through climate education, nature-based solutions, or clean energy initiatives, we believe in local solutions powered by local voices.
