What is San Diego Climate Week?

San Diego Climate Week (SDCW) is a weeklong period of events that take place once a year from October 1-8. SDCW offers opportunities for collaboration, locally-led changemaking, education, and collective action. Furthermore, SDCW aims to inspire continued progress towards reaching climate justice and resilience. SDCW first occurred just one year ago in 2025. In its first year, SDCW reached 120 events, 3,130 attendees, and 10,147 education hours. The second annual SDCW is quickly approaching, as October 1 is just a few weeks away!

Theme & Call to Action

Each year, San Diego Climate Week is accompanied by a theme and call to action. Last year’s inaugural SDCW was centered on the theme of Resilience with a call for Immediate Action for the Tijuana River. Unity, SDCW’s theme for 2026, encourages a collaborative approach to working towards common goals in the climate movement. SDCW’s 2026 call to action is to Say No to Offshore Drilling. As residents of a coastal county, offshore drilling poses significant threats to San Diegans. It harms marine ecosystems, increases pollution, worsens climate change, and presents a likely possibility of increased oil spills.

Oil spills in Santa Barbara have affected San Diego ecosystems over the years. Fortunately, the State of California has not allowed new offshore drilling for decades. However, the federal government is now pushing to expand offshore oil drilling and to restart dormant infrastructure off of California’s coast. The federal government is looking to make this expansion for offshore drilling outside of California’s three nautical mile state water boundary, meaning that the expansion would fall within federal waters. Californians must push back and unite against offshore oil drilling!

Interested in learning more about offshore oil drilling? Check out Sierra Club San Diego, the Surfrider Foundation, and San Diego Coastkeeper for more information and opportunities to take action.

Summit Events

San Diego Climate Week offers a variety of events and opportunities to gather in community, as it is composed of hundreds of events spread throughout San Diego County. SDCW accepts a variety of hosts ranging from the SDCW team itself, community organizations, and passionate individuals. There are a variety of topics covered, creating interwoven opportunities to explore topics related to climate change and environmental efforts.

Not sure what events to attend? SDCW hosts a handful of main events, called Summits, which are a great starting point for planning out your SDCW experience. This year, there are five Summits centered on Water, Land, Fire, Air, and People. SDCW’s Opening Ceremony on October 1 will feature a paddle out in hazmat suits, presenting stark visual imagery representing the continued urgency of solving the Tijuana River pollution crisis. Our Closing Celebration will take place post fashion show at the end of the People Summit.

We’ll see you there!

We hope to see you all at SDCW, both newcomers and returners alike! Check out our events, RSVP, and add them to your calendars. New events will continue to be posted until late September, and there are plenty of opportunities to choose from already with 100+ live events!
